Q: Jewish women?
Out of curiosity,
1) Why traditional Jewish women wear dresses only?
2) Why their outfits are always black?
3) I've never seen any Jewish women wearing a dress without pantyhose. Why?
No, I'm not kidding. There are a lot of Jewish neighborhoods in new york city. Come and see yourself. Yes, I do think that they're cute and attractive.
A: 1) Orthodox women wear dresses out of modesty and a commandment in the Torah that a man should not wear women's clothing nor should a woman wear man's clothing- since trousers have been considered men's attire for most of history, only changing recently, they are considered men's attire and not worn by Orthodox women.
2) Except for in a few extremist sects, their outfits are of many colours, but rarely in bright colours due to modesty.
3) How would you know they are wearing pantyhose or not? Since their dresses go to their ankles, at best you could now that they are wearing socks or knee-high pantyhose!
And a point you haven't made- Orthodox men also dress modestly since the laws of modesty apply equally to both sexes.
edit: Ezra, the wig is for modesty and is derived from the Torah and discussed in the Talmud, a bit in masechta Yevamos, and extensively in masechta Sotah (since that is where the law is learnt from). In the Torah, when it gives the law of the "drinking of the bitter waters" by the woman who is suspected of adultery (sotah), it staes that the first step is that the Kohen unbinds her hair, and uncovers her shame. This teaches us that it was required for women to wear their hair bound up and out of site, and that having it hanging loose in public was shameful. Thus we lear mi'd'oraiso the law of binding hair and keeping it covered.
Q: What is the name of the Jewish holiday where Jewish women have to clean their entire house?
What is the name of the Jewish holiday where Jewish women have to clean their entire house? I also wanted to know, why Jewish women have to do this?
A: Men AND women do this before Passover.
Why?
Because we remove all unleavened product from our homes that may have gone on the floor, in the furniture, on the counters, in the cubboards, every place, even places we don't think it will be found.
We clean under, on, around, in, out, whatever you can think of for at least a couple weeks before Passover. We don't just refrain from eating bread/grain products, we also remove it completely from our homes.
Q: What does the Talmud and Midrash say about Jewish Women covering their hair?
However, the Talmud and Midrash created rules for Jewish women to cover their hair as part of religious observation. By the Middle Ages Jewish women largely conformed to the custom of hair covering. However, in the Modern Age many women have rebelled against the practice due to social changes.
A: It comes from Numbers 5:18 where it is stated that the kohen "reveals the hair of the [Sotah] woman." This is a clear indication that women have always covered their hair. The verse in Numbers is referring to a (sotah) married woman. Therefore only married women are bound by this rule.
This is reiterated in Ketubot 72a, Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, 75:2

Q: Do Jewish women have to wait a period of time before they can remarry?
after they get diveorced or their husban dies?
Muslim women for example have to wait three menstrual cycles before they can remarry. Do Jewish women also have to wait?
Hi Tabatha,
my English is not very good so I don't exaclty know what is meant by get in this context but I googled it and I found this definition
"is a formal, clear-cut, legal process which requires only the consent of both parties. "
If this is what it means, i would say yes. For a divorce to be legal, there has to be a legal process in the court and both the wife and the husband get to sign a document. This also apply to widows. The widow gets a death certificate for their lost partner.
What I meant is Muslim women have to wait until their uterus gets clean of any remainings of their husbands and the later can only become perfectly clean after three cycles.
Yeah you are right hopeless. I wonder why you are hopeless? your answers are always great. You shouldn't be hopeless, you should be proud of yourself.
Thanks
HopelessZ00,
oh that's what you mean then, Yeah I lived in lebanon for 13 years beside a camp in (sour. Bourge Elshamali). My school was on the border of the camp and I had to walk to it everyday through that camp because that was the shortest way. I studeded in school from UNERWA. All my friends live in the camp and I spent most of my time with them in the camp. It was very small. The routes were very narrow and they are full of sewage water. The garbage is thrown beside the houses because they don't have enough containers. You go to the clinic and you get sick of the poor faces you see. They have all kinds of diseases. It is really bad. I was lucky that I didn't have to live in a camp.
Have you ever visited (El Rashidea camp in south lebabnon) It is a good one.
Please don't be hopeless. I never lose my hope.
Thank you
A: If the husband dies they are suppose to wait at least the length of the mourning periond - at least a month. As for a divource they have to wait until the gyet is handed down from the Jewish authority.
Good Luck!!!
I was under the belief that a "get" when transliterated into English was suppose to be written "gyet" (darn that orthodox sunday school teacher I had - lol) anyway I am glad to have been corrected by others as to the spelling here. Here is a link to the Wikipedia article on a Get - a Jewish divorce - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_%28divorce_document%29
Take care!!!
Q: Jewish women more drawn to powerful men then other women are?
I think Jewish people have an old Biblical view of men a women and their women think there sexual capital should be used to gain power. Monica Lewinsky is a reflection of this mentality. Of course this is a generalization but I think it has some truth.
A: I haven't seen Jewish women being more attracted to powerful men than other women are. When my mom married my dad (both sides of our family are Jewish), he'd just graduated from college and was flat broke, so she paid the down payment on their first house. She didn't care about power then and she doesn't now.
Q: if i married a jewish women would i be elligible for israeli citizenship?
can i become an israeli citizen if i marry a jewish women?
A: She'd either have to be an Israeli citizen first, or become one before you would be considered, and even then it would not be automatic, anymore than an Israeli would automatically be a US citizen if they were to marry an American.
Q: Is it looked down upon for Jewish women to marry someone that isn't Jewish?
I'm pretty sure it's not forbidden but I was wondering if Jewish women dating and/or marrying outside of the Jewish faith is frowned upon. Or are there some Jews that feel one shouldn't marry outside of the Jewish faith.
A: The reason why it would be frowned upon is because statistically more children of inter-marriages do not end up practicing or are limited in their understanding of Judaism.
Q: what did jewish women do about their periods?
what did jewish women during the holocaust do when they had their period?
were they able to take a bath?
A: I don't know. I do wonder if they stopped getting their menses, because I have always heard that many things, including poor nutrition, ill health, and several other lifestyle choices can impede it. I would think that for most women, within a few months it wouldn't have mattered, as their health began taking it's toll on their bodies.
Other than that, women have always found ways of dealing with it. Making a barrier of cloth (like a pad) seems to be the best thing I could think of at that point.
Q: Why is there a stereotype of Jewish women being sexually frigid?
My ex-girlfriend was Jewish and she was incredibly sexy and great in bed. Somewhere I read that there was this stereotype that Jewish women were sexually frigid. Why is this a stereotype?
A: Like virtually all stereotypes, it has a basis in fact but does not, and never did, apply to all Jewish women.
There's a history of sheltering Jewish girls from the ills of the world, which often includes sexual repression. The Jewish girl who's immersed only in her own culture may never hear or participate in discussion about female sexuality, may never know women can have pleasure, may not know women experience orgasms, may have been told by many people that sex is a sometimes-painful duty, may understand sex is something to endure for the sake of procreation.
Jewish guys, of course, are getting the same lack of information, and may not know how to arouse a partner, or that he should.
With that kind of "information," the mind-set of being unable to respond appropriately to sexual stimuli can be prevalent in women.
Luckily, in many places the Jewish population mixes successfully with other ethnicities, and correct information is passed to today's girls and women, who may not be getting it from the family or ethos.
Q: Can you physically tell a difference between American White women and ethnic Jewish women?
You know, Jewish by blood- women from Israel. Is there a physical difference that seperates the two groups apart?
A: Yea, I don’t know why not. Just something you pick up on i guess the little things. Me, I can tell the Asians apart very well. We all have herd qualities that are passed down to us. You just got to learn what they are. Now I know the stereo-typical view being big noses and a Fran Dresher accent, while these may be present in a great many Jews, its not all of them so you got to look deeper.
Hell I'm Irish and I think we all look alike. LOL!
Q: why do people say Jewish women are very assertive and pushy?
My girlfriend is Jewish and is extremely sexy. She is very swee, she is very submissive and timid. So why do people stereotype and say that Jewish women are very assertive and pushy?
A: because many Jewish family's are wealthy and their kids get pretty much anything they want.. they even have 8 days of getting presents in December.. So later on in life if someone say no to them they can't deal with it.
Q: Are Jewish women allowed to date Christian men?
One of my jewish friends won't date a guy because he's christian. I was just wondering how religion plays a role in this regard. Would you say this is common? It would also be important for me to what section in Judaism have the belief that jewish women should only date jewish men. i.e. orthodox? and which don't really care about this? I was just wondering because I was interested in dating a jewish girl and after what happened with my friend i've been thinking about it quite a bit. thanks for your answers.
A: Some people will not date outside of their religion, regardless of what that religion may be. However, I'm a Christian, and have dated Jews (mostly Reform Jews). I'm also engaged to marry a non-Christian. I know several Christians who are married to Jews. Some people allow their religion to dictate who they can form relationships with; others don't. I personally think it's inadvisable to allow religion to control relationships, but that's just my opinion. If you only stick to only associating with people of your own religion, think of all the interesting people you won't be meeting.
Q: Why do Jewish women have strange voices ?
Not all but numerous Jewish women who are wealthy have a certain twang when they speak - almost a nagging tone . They have a very strong nasal sound .
Why do they always sound like they are complaining about something ?
Is this cultural ? or innate ?
A: Because Jewish men spoil them to where they think they are princeses. They devlope this because they have been placed on pedestals which grow shorter as they age. They can't handle it and must develope that "twang" to try to be indifferent to their less than lofty perch. It's obviously all the guys' fault. But then again, they were trained by their Jewish mothers and p---y whipped dads.
Q: what was it like for young jewish women during the Holocaust?
Hi. I’m curious to know what happened to Jewish girls around the ages 16 – 22 during the Holocaust. Like if I was Jewish and there right now what would I experience? More specifically within; ghettos, deportations, and the concentration camps. Thanks guys so much!
A: You should go to the library!! There is a lot of books about Holocaust . I'm reading a lot of books about Holocaust right now. And also you should read "Young Hitler"( you should be find Y/A section). This book gave me a lot of "A" I was wondering about.
"I will plant you a lilac tree". Read this book. Anne's book is good but if you read this book, I believe you feel she was much better life than others.
Q: Are Israeli women different in behaviour from other Jewish women?
In Europe and America most Jewish ladies tend to be quite conservative in nature, mostly keeping themselves to themselves.
But I have heard that in Israel they tend to be more outgoing and expressive.
Is this the reality of living in a majority Jewish state?
Or am I completely wrong?
A: I am Jewish and I lived in Israel for most of my life and now I live in Canada. I can tell you one thing, you are not too far off... From what I've I would say that Israeli women are much more expressive than Canadian women. Some even find it rude at times, but it isn't they're intention at all. The exact translation of things from Hebrew to English are usually not the same in connotation. Most Israeli's are very friendly and outgoing.
