Q: Mormon Church?
I want to join mormon church. Is it possible?
A: Of course, and congratulations on your decision. I pray it will bring you as much joy as it has brought me.
If you are in the US, phone 1 800 804 2121 and ask missionaries to call on you. They will explain the church's basic beliefs and invite you to attend church with them. In the UK the number to call is 0800 597 5800 and in Ireland 1800 200 4790. Alternatively go to www.mormon.org to find your nearest chapel and go along, or fill in an online form for missionaries to call on you.
There are some great stories about people who joined the LDS church on www.mormonconverts.com (including my story).
Q: Is your view of the Mormon Church based on an episode of South Park?
I've seen a few people mention this today. Is this really where many people get their views from? Has anyone ever investigated the church without input from anti-mormon sites and programmes that dont explain what we are all about?
A: People are so ignorant when they are willing to watch and believe a cartoon OR read another person's book rather that ask a missionary.
Q: Why did the mormon church pour 25 million into Prop 8 and then?
have the nerve to be confused as to why people are angry with them? One mormon guy even said he was hurt that gays were calling the mormon church bigots. Now that it's passed, they don't want anger directed their way. Yes, alot of non-LDS people voted yes for prop 8, but the Mormon church was HEAVILY involved in promoting prop 8 and donated 25 million dollars. They were almost obsessed with it. Now they suddenly have this persecution complex. Why?
A: it's sad that people would single out one group of many for exercising their democratic right, just as much as the people who voted against it. people are upset because some people are acting as if the church somehow single handedly underminded the democratic process or something. also while your amount is off (it wasn't 25 million according to public records of the funding) what would it matter how much they donated anyway- the No on 8 campaign raised even more than the yes side. almost 3 million more to be exact- so it's not like it was an unfair fight or something...also might want to consider some of these facts...
-The actual church didn't donate any funds- they endorsed the prop and encouraged members to participate in any way they could- along with 233+ other churches
- The actual members of the church only account for less than 25% of the yes on 8 money donated to the prop (please refer to the LA Times link- you can track the money from that website)
- Over 5 million people voted for the prop. there are only 750,000 LDS members in california. If EVERY single person EVER baptized (because membership records is not based on activity) including children voted yes- that would make up for less than 15% of the votes that voted yes.
- The church had NO hand in any campaign tactics, ads etc. all of it was ran by the National Organization for Marriage which has absolutley NO affiliation with the church whatsoever.
- the No on 8 side actually ended up raising more money. With more donations from out of state than the yes side.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-mon...
- the polls show that 70% of african americans, and a little over 50% of latinos, regardless of party affiliation voted yes on the prop. Latino's make up for more than 40% of the states population. and african americans about 10%. (there were no statistics on caucasian or asian voters)
-- similar bans also passed in florida which has less than 1% mormons but the prop passed 62%.
-arkansas previously passed a ban on marriage and on civil unions at 70% and the mormon population there doesn't even make up a percentage of the population.
-Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Ohio, Utah and Oregon all passed bans in 2004 with more than 70% votes. but with the exception of Utah all of those states have less than 5% mormons in their state.
- the prop had to pass through legislation before even being on the ballot. It's not like church had any hand in that...it's not like the prop was their idea. It actually was put on by the Knights of Columbus which is backed by the Catholic church.
- 160+ organizations endorsed the prop and 60+ public officials.
Now I recognize that the church members had a big influence with those that donated time and efforts. But can you honestly say it was all the mormons? Or even the LDS church at all? Could it be that people are just looking for someone to blame?
Q: Is Mitt Romney a pastor in the Mormon church?
Does the man have any position within the church, or is he just a Mormon?
A: The LDS church doesn't have paid clergy. It's members are asked to fulfill various responsibilities. Nearly every active member has some "calling" of some sort. Often people have 2 or 3 callings at one time.
The leader of a ward (usually for about 5 years at a time) is a "Bishop". This is a member that is part of that congregation (aka "Ward"). Each ward has about 300-400 members.
A Stake consists of a number of wards. (usually 5 or 6). The leader of a Stake is called a "Stake President".
Additionally, all young men are asked to serve 2 year proselyting missions. There are currently about 60,000 of them world wide.
Among other callings, Mitt has served as a missionary in France, as well as a Bishop and a Stake President.
These are all things that he did voluntarily, for free, on his own time and his own dime.
In a nutshell, he would have been considered a local leader within the church, but not a leader of the church in general.
I believe that today he is "just a member" as you put it, however probably teaches some 14 year olds or helps in the library or something like that.
Q: Do you blame the Mormon Church for Prop 8 passing?
I just read and article that blames the Mormon Church for Proposition 8 passing in California. Do you agree or disagree?
A: VOTERS passed prop 8. there aren't that many Mormons in CA and we aren't the only church that supported the prop
Q: Gay and lesbians protestors harassing mormon church?
I find the protesting in Los Angeles unacceptable because the Church did not vote the people did. The protesters should not be focusing on the mormon Church. Catholics, Jewish, AND CONSERVATIVE Americans voted. Its crap. I hope LAPD starts arresting these people for causing traffic and disturbing the peace.
Here is another thought. If prop 8 would have not passed, they would be doing the same because a Church didnt want to marry them by calling it discrimination. Hypocrites.
A: these protest make them look like cry babies and sore losers. They should be blaming themselves for the passage of prop 8 (not that they will). The gay activists have been trying to shove their agenda down our throats for years!
Blame Gavin Newson for his "whether you like it or not" statement. Blame the teacher and her "field trip." Blame the schools for forcing gay marriage topics on children. Blame people for their threats of lawsuits against churches. Blame the 4 activist judges that started this whole mess!
Q: Why does the mormon church not let former mormons get their records off?
I have sent three letters to the mormon church one to the bishop and two to the church office building why the big run around
A: Still waiting for my finalization. It has been months. I just want my number removed and a letter proving so. I might have to call the member records myself and have them check?? The missionaries have come by three times, even though I have stated "no contact" on my letter. Also some how the bishop got my cell number (perhaps from my ex's parents, how freakin rude) They know how I feel....
Q: How much would the LDS (Mormon) church expand if Mitt Romney won the Presidency?
Would a victory by presidential candidate Mitt Romney greatly contribute to the credibility and popularity of the church of Latter Day Saints?
How many new converts would there be if America's most powerful leader were Mormon?
A: No more then the evangelical church if Huckabee wins.
No president has ever used his position to convert people, nor has the country followed his religious lead.
Lastly, there was no spike in mormon conversions while Mitt was govenor of Mass.
Q: How can I sue the Mormon Church for discrimination?
The situation is that the Mormon Church discriminated against me twice on the basis of criminal back ground and mental illness. After convincing me that baptism into their Church was the only way into Heaven, they told me that I could not get baptized because I was on parole. This caused me alot of emotional anguish because my crime was triggered by abuse. They offered no counceling services for the intense emotions brought up when my Salvation was postponed and criticized me for calling the missionaries all the time crying. Then almost a year later when I got off parole, I was denied baptism on the basis of mental illness. I'm Bipolar and they said that I might not be accountable for my sins and would not be able to keep a covenant with God. All the improvements I made didn't please them. I have no written proof that they discriminated against me.
A: You will not find salvation or Jesus Christ through the LDS. The Mormon church cannot decide to save you or postpone your salvation.
Jeremiah 29:13 [God says] "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart". There is no exception! Whether you're handicapped, abused, have committed crimes ...doesn't matter. You know why? God's Word tells us our "righteousness is as filthy rags". God doesn't give us His grace based on our perfect performance! He *makes* us His children even though we are weak and pitiful and without excuse. "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us". Romans 5:8. Christ took me - a filthy, sad piece of work and transformed me into His child.
1 Thessalonians 5:9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep [dead or alive], we may live together with him.
Jesus Christ wants *you* as you are. There is hope for you outside of the LDS.
2 Corinthians 12:9
But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.
Q: Mitt Rooney belongs to the Mormon Church that just allow blacks to join in 1978 should I even consider?
what would make African Americans want to vote for him he said it was the Church of his father but in 1978 he was a a grown man and chose to stay with a Church that would not allow blacks was it Politics that made them the Mormon church reconsider or an awakening?
A: African Americans joined the Church in 1840. The Church never condoned slavery. Joseph Smith wanted to run for President in 1844 with a plank that slaves would be freed and the payment would come from the sale of Western lands. In 1963 the Church endorsed civil rights for all Americans. In 1978 the Church gave the priesthood to all worthy males.
When did the church of Huckleberry officially repudiate slavery and racial supremacy? 1995. Should this make a difference? No. A politians religion is his own business.
Q: Why the Gay Activities only target the Mormon Church?
You probably know California just pass Prop 8 Ban on gay Marriage, why the Gay Activities only target the Mormon church?
A: because people mistakenly believe that the church gave millions to support Prop 8.
The church donated exactly $2,078.97 in total expenditures.
*People that go to that church* donated around $20-25 million and a lot of hours. Had the church done any more that, then they would have been in violation of law.
To repeat: the church gave less than 0.01% of the funding. People of that faith gave about 60-70% of the funding.
Q: Why does the Mormon Church base their beliefs on one man with no witnesses? ?
nesses. Why is the Mormon Church willing to base their belief system on Joseph Smith alone. There were no witnesses to coroborate the golden plates. There appears to be no validity to base this religion on. Can someone tell me what is missing here?
A: Testimony of the three witnesses of the gold plates:

Testimony of the eight witnesses of the gold plates:
http://scriptures.lds.org/en/bm/eghtwtns
Witnesses of Joseph Smith's miracles by the power of the priesthood:

Q: The Mormon church spent $20 million lying that churches would be sued if they refused to marry gays in CA?
yet - it WAS legal for gays to marry for months and no such lawsuit was brought. Would prop 8 have passed if the Mormon Church was not able to lie like they did?
A: The LDS church spent less than $3,000 as is allowed by law. Please check your facts.
The LDS church didn't lie. Look what happened in Massachusetts by the SAME organizations that were pushing it in Cali. There were not lies, only history.
On the other hand, the anti prop 8 groups did lie about what had and had not occurred in Massachusetts.
Lastly, marriage has been 1 man and 1 woman in California for well over 100 years. For a very brief period of time, 4 liberal judges changed the law, it went to vote, and California voters decided to maintain the definition that they'd had of marriage rather than let the judges run their state.
You don't like democracy.......move to Cuba. You'll be happier there.
Q: Why does Mormon Church grows so fast up?
So that everybody knows the official name of the Mormon Church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
A: The church so quickly because is the only true church on the face of the Earth.Secondly because helps the poor & aflicted , not just spiritually but sending them food , medication , blankets ...
For example this church was the first N.g.o. arriving to the recent recent earthquake in the south of Peru.Actually In poor countries the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has implemented a program in which faithful membres receive classes for improving their skill & then get out from poverty. There's also another program of the church to help unemployees find a job.
I love the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints because of its truth of its doctrine & because of the help it gives to the poor.
Q: What church(s) would you prefer more than the Mormon (LDS) church?
I'm a Mormon myself, but I would prefer a Japanese Baptist that I've been to yesterday(Sunday), more than the Mormon Church.
My reason: The Japanese Baptist church never said ridiculous beliefs like, "This religion is the only true religion in the world!" They just said that Christianity is the best religion for them & others who are interested, not for the whole world.
However, the Mormons always do that every time they do their testimony speeches & etc.
A: The thing about the Mormons, is although they claim they are the only true church, they also say "if you dont believe it, just go ask God yourself". There is no other church on the earth would even consider claiming such.
